This interesting article from Psychology Today examines the association between atheism and factors such as educational achievement, socioeconomic status, and governmental structure. The author's study suggests that atheism is positively associated, generally, with quality of life. As expected, a lower quality of life in regard to the factors stated above is associated with religious affiliation.
